An Inconvenient Truth

On Jan 28th, we're going to do a "Reel" sermon on the Al Gore documentary film entitled "An Inconvenient Truth."

I was flipping through the book and inside were some interesting pictures of what would take place if global warming was to persist and Greenland or the polar ice caps were to melt.  Florida would pretty much disappear and 40 million people would need to be evacuated from Shanghai.

So what am I doing living in Richmond?  Am I just being a paranoid catastrophoid?

Should I buy a hybrid car, buy only recycled paper, and demand the conservatives stick to the Kyoto Accord?  What difference am I making in taking care of God's creation?

See the trailer here:

trailer!

great trailer! can't wait to watch it!

did you hear that ICBC is no longer going to do "air care" for cars? seems like they are going in the wrong direction.

A Convenient Exaggeration?

Check out the National Post's article "The Gods are Laughing" about Gore's presentation.
Headline - Scientists who work in the fields contradicts liberal arts graduate Al Gore’s wandering through of his theories about man-induced climate change!

Contradictions

Boy, that article in the national post sure does refute a lot of Al Gore's message.  However, if the truth is found somewhere in the middle (the power of the mean), then there is still a lot to worry about!

Still begs the question, where do Christians stand on the debate?

Worshipping Creation or the Creator?

Christians will be on all sides of this debate just like any issue but the more important thing is to think in terms of WWJD and what are we to do as Christians?
We can try to answer that by looking at God's Word and Jesus' life.
From Revelations, we know that there will be a new heaven and a new earth so all that there is here will eventually be burnt up anyways; but at the same time, we are called to be good stewards of all that God has entrusted to us. However, we are to do that without finding ourselves loving creation more than the creator. A warning flag should also come up if we find ourselves caring more about the environment than loving our neighbor.

The Warning is the Weather

The new heaven and earth is first mentioned in Isaiah and then in Revelation. Both are very allegorical books and it is difficult to know exactly what "new" will be and I am guessing that if the earth is burnt up, it will be because we burn it up, not God. I agree that we need to be better stewards of the Planet. We cannot claim to love our neighbour if we do not care for the environment, as this care is a reflection of our value of our current neighbours and future neighbours well being. We are currently exploiting the planet at an alarming rate for purely economic reasons related to greed. I know a lot of Christians who find themselves loving money more than God, but very few loving the environment more than God, so I don't think we need to worry there.

This is some good discussion. Looking forward to the sermon on Sunday.

Environmental Extremes

Exploitation and greed are all part of a sinful and imperfect world. Perhaps, it will be us (man) that burn it up, perhaps not; but more importantly, I believe God is trying to teach us something more about this by allowing the destruction of the earth to show the futility of man's knowledge and wisdom in comparision to His. Man cannot save the environment in the same way man cannot save himself! It is a lesson that man keep learning over and over again but never seem to grasp.
It is only God's work thru JESUS CHRIST that saves!

Wait a minute...

Sorry, but what do you mean by "God allowing the distruction of the environment as a way to teach us a lesson?"
For God so loved the WORLD that he sent his beloved son (John 3:16)! Salvation is not only future, but NOW! Jesus begins the process of redemption for ALL of creation! Until he comes again, we have the responsiblity to create and build the KINGDOM here on earth. Sorry for being so preachy... but let's not throw our hands up in the air and give up!

Woe Woe Woe!

This is sounding very much like Kingdom Now / Dominion theology!
God send his son to save people, not the environment! What kind of exegesis are you doing?
I hope that the tap is not in agreement with this guy, he's getting close to heresy!

Do not be deceieved!!!

When GORE is GOD!

No responsible Christian would just throw up their hands and give up.
But it is irresponsible to promote GORE's movie as Gospel truth when there is still so much that's questionable! Scaring people to be good stewards will only misrepresent and foster false concepts of God's character and nature.

Hmm...

Interesting to find out that the author of the article "The Gods are Laughing" is a lobbiest for energy companies. According to the Lobbyists Registration System, Government of Canada, HPG is registered as a lobbying firm for several energy industry clients. It appears he is now the executive director for the non-profit NRSP. The NRSP is led by Executive Director, Tom Harris, who, in November 2002, while in the employ of the PR firm APCO Worldwide, organized a press conference titled "International Climate Experts Speak Out Against Climate Change Myths.". The press conference was sponsored by Talisman Energy Inc. and Imperial Oil (ExxonMobil's Canadian subsidiary). Not exactly your most environmentally friendly crowd. http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Natural_Resources_Stewardship_Project

research!

Thanks anonymous for the info!  You know your stuff!  It's not surprising.

Talisman - certainly not the most eco-friendly, nor justice friendly company out there.  At least they are finally out of Sudan.  For info, the Prebyterian church of Sudan sued Talisman claiming that the company had helped Sudanese officials bomb churches, kill church leaders and attack villages in an effort to clear the way for oil exploration.

If hype don't sell, try fear!

It's easy to knock the National Post, throw in a conspiriacy theory and blame everything on big bad companies.
One does not need to name the sponsering companies to say the same thing about GORE being the puppet and political saviour for the environmentalists and their agenda! How else would funds keep pouring in for their environmental jobs and r&d projects? Impending doom and fear mongering sells, remember Y2K?
The truth is, scientists are in disagreement within their own community about this and if there's in fact enough convincing evidence for the severity of global warming and the environment, we would not be in debate.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your blog comments.  Interesting comments!

There is controversy as to as the science of global warming.  But as written in the Sat. Jan 27th Globe and Mail by Margaret Wente - "I checked with 8 leading climate scientists, climate economists, and climate-policy analysts.  All believe that man-made climate change is a serious issue that demands action.  And all reject the extremists at both ends."  (the extremists being either in the "World is Doomed" camp or "Global Warming is make-believe" camp)

Although some of Gore's predictions may be extreme, the fact is that we have the reponsibility to look after God's creation.

Movie on Global Warming

There is another documentary out on global warming that I recently heard about. I have seen some of it and it definitely provides more food for thought. Protecting the environment is a worthy cause but there are definitely political and money driven motivations on the 'environmental' side too.

Excerpt from Mcleans

...There is no denying that, while the climate crisis is Gore's mission, it is also his business. His investment company is not, as it's frequently touted, an environmentally focused one. It's actually a mainstream investment bank, looking for firms that will profit from long-term trends -- such as public concern over the climate crisis. Generation Investment has bought into General Electric, for example, because GE makes energy-efficient light bulbs and plans to focus on energy-efficient appliances. It's a seamless project for Gore. The more people Gore can persuade to buy energy-efficient light bulbs, the better for the planet -- and the better for GE, the better for Generation Investment Management, and the better for Gore...
