Dec 29 - Zech 14

Dec 29

Read Zec 14:1-21 and Pr 31:1-20

The last chapter of the book of Proverbs provides a model or archetypal figure of what it means to be a godly woman.  It is written as an acrostic poem.  This wife of noble character displays someone who practices what she preaches. She models compassion by feeding the poor and needy. She displays diligence in her trade and work.

v. 14… she is like the merchant ships… conveys the sense that she is an enterprising person.

v. 15… she gets up while it is still dark… the opposite of the sluggard that is found through out the Proverbs

v. 16… she considers a field and buys it… she is wise with her money and shows good judgement

v. 20… she opens her arms to the poor… she looks after the needs of others.

As you read on in this passage, this woman is clothed with strength and dignity. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.  She displays commitment by providing for all the needs of her children.  This is one incredible woman!

Susannah Wesley, mother of John Wesley – the great theologian, and Charles Wesley – the most prolific hymn writer of all time, spent one hour each day praying for her 17 children. In addition, she took each child aside for a full hour every week to discuss spiritual matters.  No wonder her children were used by God.

Faith is certainly not inherited, but it certainly helps to have a godly mother.

Faith is certainly not inherited, but it certainly helps to have a godly father.

Perhaps the greatest attribute of this person can be found later in verse 30 - “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”  She humbly fears the Lord.  Re-read the Epilogue.  How is she of “Noble Character?”  What are some areas that we can work on?
