Seen any good movies lately?

So, I went to Rogers Video last night to see if I could find a movie for Ellen and I to watch on a Sunday night evening.  But to my dismay, there was nothing to be found.  I almost walked out empty-handed.  Is it just me, or have there been a lack of good movies out in the last year? I've been wanting to do a "Reel Sermon" at the Tap the last few months, but nothing seems to be out there.

If you've seen a good thought-provoking movie in the last few months, what was it and why?

By the way, I ended up walking out with "The Sentinel" with Keifer, Eva, and Michael Douglas.  Typical fair. I'd give it 2 kernels of popcorn out of 5.

The Sentinel sure was

The Sentinel sure was predictable. Even with all the eye-candy of Eva, I got pretty bored :)

I rewatched Lucky Number Slevin again. A bit violent, but it's still so witty. It's so good, I went out to buy an argyl sweater to match...

We've been watching Ratrace during lunch at work. I haven't seen it before, but it's a riot... The scene where Jon Lovitz ends up stealing Hitler's car and crashes into a WWII vets conference had me laughing up my pop outta my nose.

yah...

although quite silly, that scene in rat race was pretty funny

if movies are a reflection of society, what do the movies these days tell us about our culture?

violent, sexists, trivial?

Departed

Went to see The Departed when it came out a few weeks ago and although it wasn't super, it was still better than the original movie.

I won't ruin the movie but the whole concept of the good cop and bad cop, both undercover. It reminded me of a Christian analogy;  Christians who claim that they are saved but don't walk the talk. Contrast it with people that say aren't Christians, don't act like it, yet deep down inside, they believe.

The Mission

Has anyone seen The Mission? Deniro, Irons, 1986. I heard it was good. It was played as one of the movies in one of the classes at Regent. From IMDB:

"Jeremy Irons plays a Spanish Jesuit who goes into the South American wilderness to build a mission in the hope of converting the Indians of the region. Robert DeNiro plays a slave hunter who is converted and joins Irons in his mission. When Spain sells the colony to Portugal, they are forced to defend all they have built against the Portugese aggressors."

One Night With the King

Yes... the Mission is an excellent movie. I can't believe that its already 20 years old!

Speaking of good older movies, the Burnaby group is going to get together and watch "Babette's Feast" as part of WSAAG.

Has anyone heard of "One Night With the King?" It's a movie about Esther. That might be worth watching and then do a sermon series on Esther. The trailer can be seen at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430431/

foreign film?

well i was just browsing through the movies and i happened to see the movie "City of God". intrigued by the name, i pick it up and rented it. the movie is good, but in spanish? with english subtitles...

city of god

I've been meaning to watch this one for a while now...

it takes place in the slums of brazil...which would make the language portugese Tongue out

The Queen

I saw "The Queen" last Saturday. It was an excellent political movie... and I clearly underestimated the popularity among Victorians of a movie about a monarch.. quite the lineup for tickets.

Casino Royale is not bad if

Casino Royale is not bad if you want to sit for 2.5 hours, it is quite a long movie, but not bad i guess, better than some others ones I've seen this year.
