U2 is back in town!

Last time U2 was in town, I looked at a few of their songs on Sunday morning.  The podcast can be found at http://www.thetapestry.ca/tappodcasts/bono_and_u2_sermon_vertigo_apr_24_2005

I haven't listened to their new album "No Line on the Horizon" too often, but will do so in prep for their concert in Vancouver on Oct 28th.  I will also take a look at their new album @ the Tap on Sunday, Oct 25th.

And I need your help.  So, if you've listened to their new stuff... what do you think?  You like it?  Any God illusions in the lyrics?  Any scripture?

Magnificent!

So, I decided to use Magnificent as one of the songs I'm going to try to unpack this Sunday.  Try to have a listen, but the lyrics are below.  What is Bono singing about?  or better yet, WHO is Bono singing about?

Magnificent

Oh, oh, magnificent

I was born, I was born

To be with you in this space and time

After that and ever after

I haven't had a clue only to break rhyme

This foolishness can leave a heart black and blue, oh, oh

Only love, only love can leave such a mark

But only love, only love can heal such a scar

I was born, I was born to sing for you

I didn't have a choice but to lift you up

And sing whatever song you wanted me to

I give you back my voice from the womb

My first cry, it was a joyful noise, oh, oh

Only love, only love can leave such a mark

But only love, only love can heal such a scar

Justified, till we die you and I will magnify, oh, oh

Magnificent, magnificent, oh, oh

Only love, only love can leave such a mark

But only love, only love unites our hearts

Justified, till we die you and I will magnify, oh, oh

Magnificent, magnificent, magnificent

The Gospel According to U2

I heard the sermon. It was the same back in the 80s and 90s. I remember hearing Christians talk about how great U2 is, how christian are their songs, how great Bono is, and how they are saving the world from famine in Ethiopia and Aids in Africa. It was all good – I loved their music, it voiced my concerns and feelings, gave me a sense of identity and belonging - at least that’s what I thought back then - from an existential and humanistic point of view.

But since then, I’ve grown up. I put away my childish ways. I don’t need the music of U2, Bono (or any other band, music or thing) to make me feel closer to God. They are actually false gods. I don't need to be 'IN' with the latest cultural fad, or have the newest CDs or Movies to make me feel important or significant anymore. I now eat solid food from the Word and drink from the Water of Life - not milk from the vague and obscured lyrics of a song with a cool beat, nor muddy water from a polluted industry that’s more about self aggrandization, and gaining fortune & fame.

So thanks, but no thank. I'll stay with the Gospel according to JESUS that helps people see the true source of ultimate reality and satisfaction, rather than going to worship the Golden Bono and listen to Gospel according to U2.

get to know U2 one more time

Not a big fan of U2, but after reviewing this excellent sermon again and listening to the song again and again, I had an urge to drive to HMV to get a U2 Album as fast as I could.

Lots to think about.
