As a lot of you know, the Tap is home to this new and upcoming band called the Rev. Squad (http://www.revsquad.com) One of their songs is entitled "Under My Feet." Great title... who named it again?
Anyways, I went for a run the other day and had it on my ipod and the chorus jumped out at me. It goes -
I'm trying to finish the race
I'm dying to keep the faith
Wanting, my life to change
Help me, lead me
Fill my soul today
The line that really hit me was I'm dying to keep the faith. And the obvious way to understand that is that we are dying, hoping, and desiring to keep the faith. But, it's a double entendre. I don't know if they intentional meant to do it, but it is as Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever dies or loses his life for me will find it (Matt 16). Basically, the way to keep the faith is to die to ourselves!
Incidently, a friend asked me this week what Donald Miller in Blue Like Jazz meant when he wrote, "If we are not willing to wake up in the morning and die to ourselves, perhaps we should ask ourselves whether or not we are really following Jesus" (p.185). Maybe what it means is whether we are willing to love and serve the people around us, placing the needs of others ahead of our own, elevating others over ourselves... and to do so out of love and reverence for Jesus, who gave his life for us, the ultimate act of love and sacrifice.
If faith means following Jesus, what did Jesus do? Are we dying to keep the faith?
