What is worship?

Starting this Sunday, we will begin a new sermon series on the topic of "WORSHIP."  What is worship?  What do you think worship is?  Responses to the blog will be read and discussed Sunday morning!

Piano Free Worship

In speaking about art, photographer Elliot Porter said "A true work of art is the creation of love, love for the subject first and for the medium second." I like this quote because I think art is worship since both are all about love. But I also think "art" is more than what we normally define it to be. And so is worship by extension.

Art is worship when the subject of our loving expression is God. But that expression doesn’t have to take the form of what we normally call art. Worship is as much singing a song, as it is commuting to work, dining with friends, and crying at movies, when these are done in admiration and love for God. Conversely, it's possible to sing a "praise" song and for that to not be worship at all when we do it with the wrong intentions.

Sometimes I ask myself whether I will still know how to worship if someday I lost my hands and could no longer play an instrument. If ever I feel like saying "no," I know I may be in need of a refresher of what worship is. Music in particular has come to be associated with worship in church. While there are great reasons for this, are we somehow dependent on music to get us into worship? If on one Sunday morning at the Tap we had no songs, no dramas, and no paintings, would we feel like we somehow didn’t worship?

Worship is the expression of love for God. This is where it starts and ends. How that’s done shouldn’t matter.

Tapestry Worship is planning to have its annual ministry meeting soon. More than just a reason to come together and thank volunteers for their hard work, we would also love to hear from you on how we’ve done and what we might do to help you worship. Over the next two weeks, feel free to give us your thoughts through worship@thetapestry.ca or notes dropped into the offering box. These can be anonymous. Thanks!
