“why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug own deep and laid the foundation on a rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and it’s destruction was complete.”
~ LUKE 6 : 46-49
Have you ever felt like living was all about trying to stay afloat? Sometimes it feels as if we have to fight so hard and struggle so much just to stay alive. Eventually the will to keep life from getting the best of us seems to almost become commonplace, (even though we all wish there was a better way and things didn’t have to be so hard). Very early in our lives we find ourselves trying to develop different strategies that will keep ourselves from sinking; a close circle of friends perhaps, or a hefty bank account, or even standing on top of others in order to gain the higher ground. When our backs are against the wall the need for survival seems to be all consuming, and what we end up relying on seems to make all the difference.
Several hundred years ago on the Sea of Galilee while a small fishing boat was buffeted by the sea billows of a most violent storm twelve disciples also had to stare survival in the eye and figure out how there were going to last through it. Eleven of them decided to put their trust in a
rickety fishing boat and hung on for dear life while the other put his faith and Jesus and ended up walking on water. Who do you think had a better chance of sinking?
What we end up relying on seems to make all the difference. Friends, money, and even boats all have the ability to fail us at some point or another. Logically it is not hard to ascertain that if Jesus Christ truly does exist, he is the one sure thing that is out there. He is the one person that can keep us from drowning consistently. And that assurance is something that some of us struggle our whole lives to find in other things. After all, when we are forgiving our friends for something wrong that they’ve done, we are basically forgiving them for not being God. We are forgiving them for not being perfect. When we amass money are we not looking for an unshakable security that ultimately falls short of that given freely by Christ Jesus?
Why tread water when you can walk on it?
