Hey everyone, we just wanted to drop a line from Toronto. Hard to imagine, but it's been almost two months since we've arrived here. We have to confess, we're missing you guys and all the Olympic fun a lot! (Loretta is dreaming about Vancouver; we watch way too much Olympic coverage) In our weakest moments we've even looked at flights to come back just for the party! But alas, it is not to be. We want to live faithfully to how God has called us and lead us, even if our heart and our minds are telling us otherwise.
In the mean time the question we've been asked lots is, 'what are you doing?' And that can be summed up in two letters: PD.
PD. Two tiny little letters. A stroke here, a semi-circle there, repeat and elongate. PD. What’s there to fear?
PD, in Wycliffe-speak stands for partnership development. You may be more familiar with the terms ‘fundraising’ or ’support raising’ when it comes to people working with non-profits and charitable organizations. Whatever the term, this is what we will be focusing on before we leave for an assignment. It will be our primary focus, because, logistically, we cannot go until we have all our support raised. When we say ‘all our support raised’ we mean that we are looking for 100% of the monthly salary required for us to do our work to be pledged by a network of supporters – family, friends, strangers and churches. It will also be our primary focus because we are sensing God saying to the both of us…trust me.
Trust Me even though you’ve just moved back to Toronto and have yet to find a home or jobs.
Trust Me even though you do not yet know the specific place you are to serve.
Trust Me even though you are about to be new parents in the midst of all these unknowns.
A professor once said to our class, “All the commandments in the Bible are but another way of re-phrasing the call, ‘Trust me.’” And trust us, this has been a very difficult thing to do. We’ve been well trained in our professions, haven’t we? We’re able bodied people, aren’t we? We shouldn’t be relying on the hard work of other people, should we? Ever fiber in our being has been answering, “Yes.” Yes we have been well trained and yes we should be able to find employment. Yes we are ready and willing to work for financial compensation. Yes we shouldn’t be relying on other people’s hard work. And yet, amidst our doubts we keep on sensing this call, or perhaps, this whisper for this particular time in our lives, “Trust Me.”
