Song of Songs - Introduction
“If all of scripture is holy, then the Song of Songs is the holiest of holies.” Rabbi Akiva
Right here in the middle of the Bible, we have this unique and wondrous book called the Song of Songs, whose poetry and verse is among the most beautiful love songs that we have from the ancient worlds. Reading the Song of Songs is like dreaming a dream of a lush and vibrant Garden bursting with life and love. It gives voice to our deep longing for human connection and sharpens our focus upon the one whom our hearts truly longing for, God, our beloved, as it is written, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine” (6:3).
Through it’s multiple layers of imagery, metaphor and meaning the Song of Songs calls us to return to the Garden, return to the place where the love of God is thick and the love of between male and female is rich and vibrant and life giving.
