Song of Songs_Love is a Garden
Solomon’s Song of Songs. “You who dwell in the gardens with friends in attendance, let me hear your voice! Come away, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or like a young stag on the spice-laden mountains.” Songs of Songs 1:1, 8:13-14
From start to finish the Song of Songs is a love song between a man and a woman expressing their intense longing and desire for one another as the object of their affections. Here there is no narrative rails to hold on to, no sequence of events to follow, only dialogue, the lyrics of a song of love. To love and to be loved, that’s what the Song of Songs is about.
Yet, as much as the Songs are a poetic tour de force celebrating the love of eros, it’s also a song that points to something more. It’s a song that helps us see the creative, redeeming and healing power of God’s love for us and the vision of human flourishing that comes with his presence.
