Song of Songs_Covenantal Love

“Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.” - Songs of Songs 4:16

There’s good reason to think of chapter 4 of Song of Songs as the centre of gravity for the whole book. For 3 chapters we hear the poetry of two lovers expressing mutual admiration for one another, longing to be in each other’s presence and restlessly searching for each other when out of sight. Back and forth the dialogue goes, the push and pull of eros resonating in us the readers. But now, in chapter 4, the lovers speak for the first time about a marital union with the movement in these verses that seem to reflect the joys of covenantal love being consummated.

In this study we reflect on the unitive and generative purposes of our sexuality, the meaning of marriage and the mission and ministry of the church.
