PSALMS: Praying The Story (Introduction)
The Book of Psalms is a collection of poems that come from the context of Israel’s worship. It is a book that contains songs of lament, thanksgiving, celebration and praise directed to God. Not only that, it is also a book that is full of prayers: prayers of complaint in difficult and distressing situations, prayers of thanksgiving in celebrating what God has done, prayers of rejoicing in God’s goodness, provision and care. It is a prayer book that covers the whole range of human emotions. The book of Psalms were also used personally by the early Christians as the emotional handbook that one could even say there is such thing as “psalmno-therapy” (Waltke & Houston, The Psalms as Christian Worship, 10).
